5th Grade • Alvaton Elementary School

Delanna Herald obtained a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and an associate’s degree in Social Sciences from Lindsey Wilson College in 2004. She first began her teaching career in Glasgow Independent Schools where she taught ESL and 3rd grade. Five years later, she moved to Alvaton Elementary where she has taught 5th grade for the last 15 years. During her time at Alvaton, she has obtained a master’s degree in elementary education from Western Kentucky University and has a Rank 1 as a National Board Certified Teacher in the area of EarlyMiddle Childhood Literacy.

She is currently a 5th grade teacher whose core subject area is writing/grammar, but she also teaches math groups, social studies and science. In addition to teaching, she coaches the Robotics Club and she is the lead planner for the 5th grade Washington DC school trip.

What is your favorite part of being a teacher?

“One of my favorite parts of teaching is seein the world through the eyes of a child. When their whole face lights up because they finally ‘got it’ or when they discover something for the first time it just makes every day worth it. I also love building relationships with the students. It is not all about learning. It is about showing and teaching students compassion, love and understanding.”

Why did you choose a career in education?
“When I was in 4th grade, my teacher selected me to participate in helping to assist a kindergarten teacher with her students. I would help them with letter sounds, gross motor skills and math. Little did my teacher know, this would be the beginning of the path to my future career. I have always loved helping others, learning and making a difference in the lives of others. What better way to fulfill all of that than to be a teacher? I have the best job in the world!”

Delanna is married to Allen Herald and they have two sons, Cash and Waylin. They love spending time at the lake, going out on the boat and camping. They also enjoy both family vacations and taking time to just relax at home.
