When Kaitie and Joshua Biggs decided to design and build their dream custom home, they knew they wanted a retreat from the fast pace of life where they could slow down. Now that they have been in the home for a year, they truly feel like they have created a unique space that fits their family and lifestyle perfectly.

“When my husband and I designed the home, we wanted our home to feel like an oasis,” Kaitie says. “The world felt like it was falling apart all around and we wanted a haven away from all the chaos, where we could connect with nature and each other. At the end of the day, what we wanted most was to provide a happy and peaceful home for our daughter.”

The 4,000 square foot home features three bedrooms, three full bathrooms and two half bathrooms. Kaitie says the couple’s personal style leans towards a modern industrial feel, with Japanese and Swedish influences throughout the décor of the home. They also incorporated several elements to create a homey feel in the main gathering areas because the Biggs’ knew they wanted to create a space that was going to accommodate entertaining family and friends.

The house is awesome for hosting and entertaining,” Kaitie says. “We built this home with ample seating and activities to do indoors and outdoors. The living room and kitchen flow into one common area and offers seating at the dining table, islands, conversation area, couch and two swivel chairs, providing ample space for relaxation and conversation. In the nicer weather months, the garage door can be raised and the sliding doors opened to connect both the outdoor and indoor spaces.”

Kaitie’s favorite piece of furniture in the home is the custom-made dining table created by Bowling Green Home Furnishings.

“It is a live-edge dining table with a polished steel base to really set off our modern, industrial feel. The middle of the table has matte, black epoxy, which is definitely one of our favorite colors. The elongated table makes it easier to accommodate larger family and friend gatherings.”

Now that the couple is living in their finished home, Kaitie says she has had time to reflect on the whole experience of creating the home and being involved in every aspect of the build.

“My best advice to those building or remodeling is to take your time and really think about what you want,” Kaitie says. “We had to rush through most of the project to secure our interest rate before they went up, so there are things I wish I had time to really think through and get advice on. We also were general contractors ourselves, but when you’re doing a really custom build, it is often worth it to have someone to guide the project.”

While the Biggs’ first home they purchased together in 2019 was in a local subdivision where their daughter enjoyed having friends close by, this new home affords the family more space inside and out and they are enjoying their time together in their new space.

“I love where our home is now,” Kaitie says.

“Being out in nature and watching God’s creation all around in every season is such a blessing. There’s so much wildlife to watch. It’s so nice to come home after work and really unwind in true peace and quiet. The home reflects us being ourselves. We tried not to worry about what was super trendy or in style while we were building it. We just picked what we liked and took inspiration from different places we traveled.”
