Leading Ladies: Connie Smith

Story by Amelia Bowen
Connie Smith serves as President and CEO of Med Center Health, a six-hospital, not-for-profit premier healthcare system headquartered in Bowling Green. Her role is to lead and support over 4,500 team members who work together to fulfill the mission of caring for people and improving the quality of life in the communities they serve. Her career at Med Center Health began in 1981 while completing her nursing studies at Western Kentucky University, evolving over three decades into her appointment as President and CEO in 2011. While her career has taken many unexpected turns, she is incredibly grateful for each one and for the people who encouraged and supported her along the way. “Leadership is not about holding a title or having all the answers,” Connie says. “It is about listening, surrounding yourself with talented people and having the courage to pursue a vision larger than yourself.” That vision has helped drive expansion across the region, including partnerships like the UK College of Medicine Bowling Green Campus and The Medical Center WKU Health Sciences Complex. Yet for Connie, progress is measured as much by personal compassion as by institutional growth. Guided by the enduring example of Florence Nightingale, Connie combines a focus on quality with an unwavering dedication to patient advocacy and expanded access to care across the region. Away from work, Connie brings that same discipline to her personal well-being. She finds balance by logging miles as a runner and completing more than 2,700 hot yoga classes. For Connie, caring for her own health allows her to be present for her family, including her husband of more than 40 years, Rick; their daughter Melanie; son-in-law Jeremy; and grandchildren Lincoln and Lillie. Through her service on the Kentucky Health Collaborative Executive Committee and the UK Joint Executive Oversight Committee, Connie remains dedicated to opening doors for emerging female executives and expanding care for underserved communities. “Earlier in my career, I viewed success through the lens of doing my job well,” Connie says. “Today, I measure success by the difference we make for our patients and whether we are preparing capable leaders to carry our mission forward. My goal is to live a life of purpose, serving with compassion and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.”
