Leading Ladies: Catherine Vaughn

Story by Amelia Bowen

The drive that defines Catherine Vaughn’s executive leadership was forged in quiet, early-morning training sessions years before she purchased Hill-Motley Lumber Company in 2004, continuing a family legacy that now spans over 80 years. An NCAA All-American competitive swimmer whose high school and collegiate records stood untouched for over two decades, Catherine learned early that true success requires discipline, perseverance and putting in the work when no one is watching. “I did not walk into the business knowing every answer,” Catherine says. “I learned by asking questions, listening to people who knew more than I did, leaning on mentors and experienced employees and being willing to do the work. No one builds anything meaningful alone.” Today, as owner and president, Catherine oversees every facet of the business: from financial performance and purchasing to sales, daily operations and long-term strategy. Before much of the community wakes up each morning, Hill-Motley trucks roll out of the yard, delivering materials that construct local homes, commercial developments and infrastructure. Yet for Catherine, the ultimate goal of executive leadership is not to manage every task, but to empower a talented team and preserve a legacy of stability that has provided jobs for area families for generations. Her leadership journey has been heavily influenced by her parents. Her father instilled a deep respect for business leadership and carrying on a legacy, while her mother provided an enduring model of grace, faith and unshakeable encouragement. “My mother was my greatest influence,” Catherine says. “Whenever I faced an obstacle, she reminded me that ‘this too shall pass.’ Those simple words remind me that difficult seasons are just that: seasons. You keep going, learn from them and emerge stronger on the other side.” Catherine’s commitment to community extends far beyond the lumberyard. A 2005 Leadership Bowling Green graduate, ten-year Chamber Ambassador, former Operation PRIDE board member and active member of First Baptist Church, she consistently invests in local causes that strengthen families, education and youth development. Hill-Motley has also long supported Habitat for Humanity, aligning with Catherine’s passion for helping local families build a strong foundation for their future. Above all, Catherine defines her ultimate success by the example she sets for her daughters, Charlee and Madeline. Whether playing a round of golf, cheering on her girls from the sidelines or supporting local community initiatives, she remains grounded in faith ,gratitude and wholehearted living. “I want younger women to know they do not have to choose between being strong and feminine, ambitious and nurturing, successful and present, ”Catherine says. “Most of all, I want my daughters to grow up with the confi dence to walk into any room and know they belong.”
