Bowling Green’s 40 Under 40: Kate Payton

Story by Amelia Bowen

Raised in Horse Cave, Kentucky, Kate wanted to be an attorney ever since watching her father work in law enforcement, seeing early on how meaningful it is to help people navigate the legal system. After earning degrees from Western Kentucky University and the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law, Kate built her practice around quiet, intentional service. She credits her parents for modeling leadership without seeking recognition, a lesson she puts into practice daily. Beyond her legal work, Kate mentors area students through ELPO’s Legal Diversity Pipeline project and Junior Achievement, showing young people that there are many different paths into the legal field. Her experience with Leadership Bowling Green and local organizations like Refuge BG continues to shape her commitment to the region, where she now serves as a board member for the Family Enrichment Center. At home, Kate and her husband Ray keep busy cheering on their two children, Payton and Eliza, at various sports and activities. Whether hosting friends or traveling to bucket list destinations, Kate focuses on stepping forward with confidence and showing up fully for her family.
