Bowling Green’s 40 Under 40: Diego Cabrera, M.D.

Story by Amelia Bowen

From Lima, Peru to Southern Kentucky, Dr. Diego Cabrera has dedicated his life to serving others with excellence, deep compassion and an unwavering work ethic. Dr. Cabrera knew by age 13 that he wanted to become a physician, inspired by family members in medicine and a natural talent for science. He earned his medical degree from Cayetano Heredia University in Peru before completing his residency and fellowship training at Henry Ford Hospital through Wayne State University in Detroit. Today, Dr. Cabrera serves as a medical oncologist at Med Center Health, where he works tirelessly to expand high-caliber cancer care across the region. His leadership spans patient care, medical education, clinical trial accessibility and building specialized care hubs like the dedicated breast clinic. He also collaborates with the national Commission on Cancer to ensure local patients receive top tier care close to home. Grounded by a humbling volunteer experience delivering free medicine in the mountains of Peru, Dr. Cabrera actively supports local efforts with the American Cancer Society and Hospice of Southern Kentucky. Outside the clinic, Dr. Cabrera treasures time with his wife of nine years and their two young sons. Whether traveling, playing soccer or enjoying quiet moments at home, he balances a demanding career with rich personal passions. “Life moves fast, so I try to stop and smell the roses,” Dr. Cabrera says. “Being dedicated to my family, my career and my patients brings true fulfillment every single day.”
