Leading Ladies: Sherry Murphy

Story by Amelia Bowen

Tourism is far more than travel and recreation; it is the front door to a community and a primary economic engine that fuels local pride. At the helm of the Bowling Green Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Executive Director Sherry Murphy leads a small but mighty team of staff members working daily to position Bowling Green and Warren County as a premier destination for leisure travelers, sports tournaments and regional events. A Russellville native and graduate of Western Kentucky University’s hospitality program, Sherry brought over two decades of industry experience back home when she took over the CVB in 2018. The Bureau promotes signature local assets including motorsports at Beech Bend, the National Corvette Museum, Lost River Cave and historic sites while producing regional visitor guides, managing lodging tax distribution and hosting guests at their official visitor centers. “Our office serves as the front door to our community, which means creating a welcoming, positive experience from the moment someone arrives,” Sherry says. “Tourism transforms communities, supports our local small businesses and builds a deep sense of shared pride in where we live.” Behind Visit BGKY’s momentum is a collaborative office culture where Sherry prioritizes mentoring the next generation of hospitality leaders. Having stepped into her first executive role at age 26, she relies on a balanced leadership style rooted in integrity, open communication and teamwork. In 2023, Governor Andy Beshear appointed her to the Kentucky Tourism Development Finance Authority, where she helps evaluate major development projects across the commonwealth. Whether problem-solving along-side her staff or representing Bowling Green on statewide and national stages, her approach remains focused on empowering others. “Strong leadership is about finding a balance between head and heart, listening and empowering your team to execute a shared vision,” Sherry says. “Success is seeing our local restaurants, hotels and attractions thrive because people chose to visit Bowling Green.” Through dedicated destination marketing, community outreach and a passionate team, Sherry and her staff ensure that Bowling Green continues to roll out a warm welcome for every guest who walks through the door.
