VIP Teacher Spotlight: Jonathan Vanderpool

Story by Amelia Bowen

Jonathan Vanderpool brings more than two decades of educational experience to his role as an ESL teacher at Bowling Green Junior High School, where he has served students for the past 11 years. His career began in 2001 teaching music, arts and humanities in Franklin, Kentucky, before transitioning to elementary music and choir in Bowling Green. In 2009, Jonathan and his family moved to India, where he spent three years teaching adult learners in multilingual settings, an experience that would later shape his passion for language education. After returning to the United States in 2012, Jonathan joined the ESL program at Warren Central High School, where he taught newcomer students and served as department head. He later moved to Bowling Green Junior High, where he continues to support students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds as they navigate both language acquisition and academic success. In addition to his work in education, Jonathan is an accomplished vocalist and performer who has appeared with Orchestra Kentucky, Ramsey Theatre Company and other music organizations locally and nationally. Whether in the classroom or on stage, he is driven by a desire to connect with others and help them grow, making a lasting impact on the students, families and communities he serves.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT TEACHING? I love the opportunity to build relationships with students as I introduce them to new and challenging subject matter. Whether I’m teaching music, language or other academic content, my goal is to walk alongside them as individuals with the hope that it has a positive, far-reaching impact on both them and their families.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? By far, the most rewarding part of my job is building relationships with international students and their families, especially those who are new arrivals with limited English proficiency. Watching them become successful, empowered and integrated members of our community is a joy.
