VIP Top Docs & Health Pros: Dr. Salam Kassis, M.D.
Story by Amelia Bowen
After more than a decade in academic medicine, Dr. Kassis was ready for a new challenge. That next chapter brought him to Bowling Green. For Dr. Kassis, joining Kassis Salameh Plastic Surgery wasn’t simply a career move. It was an opportunity to bring years of academic experience to a community practice while partnering with longtime friend Dr. Bernard Salameh, whom he has known for more than 26 years. After years of serving in leadership roles at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, including Vice Chairman of Plastic Surgery, Associate Professor and Surgeon in Chief at Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital, Dr. Kassis was ready to step into private practice. Joining Dr. Salameh allows him to bring decades of academic experience to patients throughout Bowling Green and South Central Kentucky while becoming part of a practice already known for personalized, patient centered care. That philosophy shapes every aspect of the practice. Specializing in facial plastic surgery, Dr. Kassis focuses on deep plane facelifts, rhinoplasty and migraine surgery. Facial plastic surgery is often associated with dramatic cosmetic transformations, but Dr. Kassis sees his work through a different lens. His goal isn’t to change how someone looks. It’s to help patients look refreshed, confident and like the best version of themselves. Each day begins early in the operating room, where Dr. Kassis prefers to perform surgeries first thing in the morning. Once his procedures are complete, his focus shifts to consultations with new patients. Although every procedure is different, every conversation starts the same way: by listening. Dr. Kassis believes understanding a patient’s goals is just as important as surgical expertise, allowing him to create results that complement rather than redefine a person’s natural appearance. That approach reflects decades spent refining both his surgical skill and philosophy of care. Double board certified and fellowship trained through Yale and Vanderbilt, and with more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and over a decade of experience, Dr. Kassis has made significant contributions to the advancement of facial plastic surgery. Along the way, he says some of his greatest mentors taught him lessons that extended far beyond the operating room. Technical excellence is only part of being a great surgeon. Integrity, humility and always putting the patient’s best interests first are equally important. Those principles continue to guide every decision he makes. Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual, blending advanced surgical techniques with careful planning and honest conversations about expectations. As facial plastic surgery has evolved over the last decade, Dr. Kassis has embraced innovations that allow for more precise procedures, faster recoveries and increasingly natural results. Rather than following passing trends, he believes successful surgery should preserve the characteristics that make every patient unique. Looking ahead, he sees healthcare becoming even more personalized through advances in technology, imaging and regenerative medicine, but believes innovation should never replace the trust between physician and patient. Outside the operating room, Dr. Kassis values balance. Whether he’s playing golf, practicing yoga or exploring hiking trails, he believes long term wellness comes from consistency over perfection. Small, healthy habits practiced every day have a lasting impact. “What I’ve appreciated most is how welcoming everyone has been,” Dr. Kassis says. “There’s a genuine sense of connection here, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve this community.” For Dr. Kassis, the guiding principle behind his practice is simple: treat every patient the way you would want a member of your own family to be treated. It means taking time to listen, communicating honestly and never losing sight of the trust each patient places in his care. After years of teaching future surgeons and advancing facial plastic surgery in academic medicine, Dr. Kassis is excited to build lasting relationships with the patients and families of South Central Kentucky. Techniques and technology will continue to evolve, but the heart of great medicine remains the same. It begins with trust, grows through compassion and leaves every patient feeling seen, heard and cared for.
