VIP Teacher Spotlight: Chris Calvert

2nd Grade • Jody Richards Elementary

Chris Calvert graduated from WKU with his Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 2012, and then obtained his Master’s degree in Teacher Leadership from The University of Cumberlands in 2018. Shortly after his student teaching at Alvaton Elementary, he moved to Louisville and got his first job as a teacher’s assistant at Camden Elementary in Oldham County. He went on to teach for two years in Jefferson County, at Wilder and Sanders Elementary, then moved back to Bowling Green where he taught at Warren Elementary for five years. He is now at Jody Richards Elementary, where he has taught for the past four years.

What is your favorite part of being a teacher?
“The thing I love most about teaching is seeing my students grow, each and every day. There isn’t anything better than seeing the ‘light bulb’ go off, and witnessing their joy of learning something new!”

Why did you choose a career in education?
“In college, I had no idea what I wanted to do! I walked out of freshmen orientation as an electrical engineering major, in which my mom told me to walk right back in and change it due to the fact that I am terrible at math. So I then changed it to photojournalism, however, that only lasted a few weeks. But, then I chose to coach my brother’s baseball team, and loved seeing my players grow and had a blast interacting with them. After doing this for two seasons, I declared my major in elementary education because of how fulfilling this was, and it’s all history from there!”

What is your favorite book?
“My favorite book is ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.’ I’ve read it to my classes for the past 6 years. My students love when they get to wear the Sorting Hat and receive their houses!” Chris is married to his wife, Paige, and together they share three children. They enjoy traveling, playing games, mini golf and attending sporting events together. He finds the most rewarding part of his job to be creating relationships with his students and their families.
