VIProfile: John and Sebrina Erskine

Story by Angela Reeves

John and Sebrina have been choosing joy since they met on a blind date in 1978. Sebrina laughs as she recalls John calling her Sylvia all night and her never correcting him! They married in 1981 and have raised four children since then, now with two grandchildren as well. From the beginning of their marriage they loved “junking” together as a hobby and in the late 90s opened a funky junk antique store called Boomerang in Bowling Green, which set the stage for their current shop – Paradise Point at Barren River Lake.

The couple has always enjoyed cooking, baking, and food preparation. From the 80s until 2010 they taught college Sunday School and during that time they fed a lot of kids and got lots of practice “loving on people.” Paradise Point is an extension of everything they love – people, food, art, antiques, and funky junk! You can find Sebrina in the kitchen with her colorful aprons cooking up amazing food, or in the store explaining some of the cool antiques or retail items she found for the shop, and John out front greeting people as he entices them with the hotdog cart, or painting another unique piece of art.

John was born and raised in Bowling Green, attending WKU and Logan College of Chiropractic, practicing for 35 years, winning Best of Bowling Green in Chiropractic 13 years. Sebrina is from Georgia and went to WKU as well and managing John’s chiropractic practice for 35 years. The couple live in Scottsville and John stumbled onto the “for sale” sign at the now-home to Paradise Point at Barren River Lake, when he was driving to the lake one Sunday looking at boats. He bought the property on a whim, and then the whole family collaborated on deciding what to do with it, coming up with Paradise Point Marketplace, “Your Ultra Hip Oasis for Lakeside Shopping and Good Eats.” Their shared passion is loving and serving people - adding joy and fun to their lives, so they invented an atmosphere to do just that! “We love to make folks happy and laugh and provide them a fun place for families to be together,” said Sebrina. John also has a passion for painting art, much of which you can see and purchase at Paradise Point.

“Our family is our greatest accomplishment. We’re proud to have raised four kids who love us, love each other, and all contribute to making the world a better place,” said Sebrina. Both John and Sebrina say the other is their biggest influence. Together they have helped each other be the person God created them to be, living out Galatians 1:9 – Let us not grow weary in well doing for in due season we will reap, if we faint not. Paradise Point has been able to stay open during the quarantine and their goal is to continue pressing forward – providing people a safe, fun, light hearted place to visit.

They live and work each day by the Disney motto: Whatever you do, do it well. Do it so well when people see you do it they will want to come back and see you do it again and they will want to bring others and show them how well you do what you do.

You can visit Paradise Point at 10300 New Glasgow Road in Scottsville. Check them out online at www.paradisepointky.com and on Facebook @ParadisePointKY.
