VIP at Home: Simple and Southern

Story by Angela Reeves | Photography by Alan Hudson

Simple and southern, with a touch of modern. The Sewells knew exactly what they were going for when they purchased their 1960’s landmark home on Smallhouse Road in June of 2018. The Sewells value hard work and family, which is apparent in their lives and their home. If they aren’t working, you can usually find them together, enjoying the outdoors and each other’s company. Alex and Lindsey Sewell are Bowling Green entrepreneurs and community influencers. Alex, 37, is the owner of Southern Touch Lawn and Landscapes and founder of Mission Mow, a nonprofit affiliate of Southern Touch Lawn and Landscapes. Lindsey, 31, is the owner of The Greenhouse of Bowling Green and serves as the Minister of Worship at Greenwood Baptist Church. They have two children, Nox, 7, and Texas, 5, who attend TC Cherry Elementary school.

They love living on two acres in the heart of BG, making it convenient to get anywhere in town while still having privacy and a beautiful open view. Over the past year several renovation projects were completed to their home. The most noticeable is the painted brick, which they completed themselves in the fall of 2018 with the help of some employees and the design eye of Liz Bradley with Lulus at Home. This has been their most loved project and completely changed the look of the traditional home.

In addition to the painted brick, they have updated exterior doors, landscaping, added awnings, and installed new garage doors with the help of Overhead Door of Bowling Green. They also updated and added outdoor lighting with the help of Eric Haley, owner of Artisan Electrical and installed a paver patio and fire pit with the help of Dave Dubert, owner of Elite Hardscape’s.

The Sewells love being outside and entertaining so it’s no surprise their most loved and used space has become their patio. Most nights you can find them swinging on the front porch, hanging out with friends around the fire pit, or enjoying the covered patio. This year they plan to add a pool to their outdoor area as well.

The attached garage which serves as Lindsey’s Greenhouse office is one of their favorite rooms. This space was designed by Liz Bradley. Southern Touch and The Greenhouse have partnered with LuLu’s and Liz Bradley through their business for several years. When they bought the house there was no doubt they would be working together on home projects as well. “Liz is such a great person to work with. She’s always looking out for her clients and the spaces she creates with them. Working with her in our home has been so rewarding and we love the friendship we have grown with her over the years,” said Lindsey. The office is inviting, modern, eclectic and a little boho which goes perfectly with Lindsey’s personality and style. It’s one of the many places Alex and Lindsey like to enjoy their morning coffee.

One of their favorite pieces inside their home hangs on the walls of Alex’s in-home office. Gifted to him in 2019, hang three custom hand-made shadow boxes from dear friends and Kentucky’s 2019 Mr. and Mrs. Kentucky United States holders, Joseph and Emily Campbell.

Joe hand crafted the three shadow boxes out of wood from his late father’s wood shop which display Alex’s ARMY uniforms from his service in Iraq. The shadow boxes are complete with led light bars that shine on each uniform at night. “We love being able to display Alex’s achievements in our home with these gifts from our friends,” said Lindsey.
