Exquisite Design & Everyday Function

When you walk into Andy and Keila Shultz’s new home in the Olde Stone community in Bowling Green, you can tell the new build beautifully marries exquisite design with everyday functionality, something the owners knew they wanted for their young family.

“Our family of five really enjoys being able to hang out together in the same room,” Andy says. “The open floor plan really helps with that. We also love the beautiful cabinetry that provides functionality for our family. We were really in need of storage and an open floor plan that fit our family, so we designed the house that provided those things for us.”

Andy and Keila, who own The Koin Group, a real estate development company operating in four states, have been in many beautiful homes, but they knew for this new house they wanted to include a few touches that really help their kids to have a space to call their own. The pair included an extra large bonus room upstairs to fit the family’s needs for a space to be together, as well as a spot for the children and their friends to hang out. Their daughters also have a hidden room that has toy storage, but also connects to the bonus room.

The Shultzes began construction of the five-bedroom, five-bathroom, 3,500 square foot home in December 2020 with the help of Sweets Design Build and Laura Lee Interior Design.

“Laura Lee Childers was our first choice to help us design this house,” Keila says. “She was
absolutely amazing to work with and help guide us through the entire process. She worked handin-hand with our builder, Darrel Sweets and the other contractors, so it made things work extremely well. Her expertise in design was just what we were looking for and we could not have done this build without her help.”

The couple relied on Childers to guide them for lighting and plumbing fixtures, as well as tile
for the house and she worked to design the barn doors, fireplace and accent wall in the dining room. The Shultzes both have favorite aspects of their home, although it may not be what you would expect.

“Keila and Andy were great to work with through the construction process. I loved helping them bring personality to the home. From a pink vanity for the girls, a bold dining room accent wall, fun lighting and tile...those details laid the foundation for making each space uniquely their own,” says Laura.

“I love the 10-foot-tall ceilings and eight-foot-tall doors in the main floor,” Andy says. “It makes the house feel larger than what the square footage shows. If you ask Keila, what she loves most about the house is the laundry room with storage for each of the kids and also the open concept that we created for our family.”

Keila describes the design of the home as southern traditional, but with a modern take. The home’s walls, flooring and cabinetry all maintain a very neutral palate, with a few bold choices, such as the dining room wood accent wall.

Once construction was finished on the home in October 2021, work began to design details for each room to finish the space. Two of the very first pieces they found for the home were cabinets that Andy’s mother, Michelle Shultz, and her friend Sandra Abell found at a sale in Atlanta to put on either side of the family room fireplace. The pieces were painted to match the accent wall in the dining room. Sandra also made the beautiful curtains which hang in the dining room.

Next, Keila headed to Embellish Home in Bowling Green and met with owners Natalie Hughes and Lisa Marshall to find more unique pieces for the home. “Natalie and Lisa were so fun to work with for the interior touches,” Keila says. “They were so great in helping us understand the style we wanted and make a plan of how to create that for our home. They listened to what was important to us as a family and made the space a perfect balance of beauty and comfort. They were a joy to work with and their eye for detail is second to none. We are extremely pleased in how it turned out.”

Since Natalie and Lisa came in for décor towards the end of the project, they knew they wanted to add beautiful pieces that worked with the home’s design. “We really wanted to keep it light and airy, while still adding the vibrant pops of color,” Natalie said. “With the ages of their children, we knew we wanted everything to be kid-friendly and comfortable to them. We both loved so many pieces of the décor. Lisa loved the art we added in the living room and I loved the buffet that contrasts against the dark accent wall.”

Keila and Andy are so pleased with how the new home turned out and they both are looking forward to enjoying the amenities of their new community this summer. “We wanted to build in Olde Stone because of all the things the neighborhood provides,” Andy says. “We have great friends living in the neighborhood and our kids really enjoy that most of all.
