Kathryn Houchins started her teaching career in 2003 at Washington County High School and moved the following year to Greenwood High School. In 2010, when South Warren High School opened, she moved there and has taught there ever since.
Kathryn loves reading both classic and modern books. Her favorite books include Pride and Prejudice, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and the Fourth Wing series. She is an avid Snoop Dogg fan, for both his music and who he is as a person. “I always tell my students they can reinvent themselves–just look at Snoop! He is so much more than a musician, he even has a kids show now, which I never could have imagined when I was in high school or college. Years ago, people mostly talked about Snoop’s mistakes, but now he seems to be universally loved,” she says. “I want my students to know that what they have done doesn’t have to define them; we all make mistakes. Despite that, at any time we can choose who to be–just like Snoop.”
What has been the most rewarding part of being a teacher?
“I love watching students accomplish something they never thought possible whether it be passing an exam, getting into their dream school, landing an ideal job or overcoming an eating disorder. For such a brief moment in time, I am part of my students’ worlds, and I love sharing their moments with them. They are so ready for that next step in their lives, and I love when it works out for them while they are still in high school. I don’t know how many military signings, athletic signings and graduation parties I’ve attended. It is so rewarding when they want me to be a part of their celebrations.”
Why did you choose a career in education?
“I come from a family of educators and vowed not to follow the same path. I saw how stressed they all were; they never fully got a break from work because teaching is so much more than just a job. However, I realized I wasn’t satisfied focusing on just myself and my life. I also finally recognized how much my family members love their students and work, and I wanted that same fulfillment. And I absolutely love my job. I get to help others, and I am constantly challenged and inspired by my students.”
