Resort Living at Home

Tony and Shelly Rhoades have moved 16 times in their 37 years of marriage - so when it came to a new home, they knew what they wanted and who they wanted on their team. Their most recent home was completed in November of 2018 by Doug Martens at The Club at Olde Stone. This is the second home they have built in the neighborhood, with Doug as their builder each time.

“We love living in Olde Stone. We feel like we are on vacation here,” said the Rhoades. The Club at Olde Stone offers resort living with the golf course, pool, fitness center, dining room, playground, and tennis courts. The Rhoades love driving their golf cart around the neighborhood and taking their grandchildren for a ride to the playground.

Tony is from Central City, KY and Shelly from Louisville, KY, with their three married children living in Bowling Green and Nashville, so they enjoy living centrally close to all of the family. With their large family and six grandchildren, it was important to them to have the home be open and inviting, with every inch very livable.

Tony has worked for State Farm for 36 years, now managing two agencies, one in Bowling Green and another in Scottsville, and Shelly works from home summarizing medical records for a law firm. While they spend most of their days at work, in the evenings they try to exercise, go to a WKU or Hot Rods game, or attend a function at the country club. On summer weekends they can be found on their houseboat at Lake Cumberland. While houseboating last summer, they discovered an old fence corner-post that had been floating in the lake for quite some time. It still had some barbed wire wrapped around it. “I couldn’t wait to bring it home and make it the mantle for our keeping room off the kitchen. It reminds me of summer and all of our fun memories at the lake,” said Shelly.

Their new home is a craftsman style, with an angled garage, painted brick, cedar shingles and porch columns. Because the house is located on the golf course, they wanted to take full advantage of the view. The home has an open floor plan with spacious porches and lots of windows across the back. Some unique features include a morning-kitchen off the master bedroom, two laundry rooms and built-in double bunk beds for the kids. They have a barn door made by Tony’s father with barn wood from his childhood home in Muhlenberg County.

The Rhoades like to describe their home as “the house of ceilings.” Most of the rooms feature some sort of ceiling technique or feature - from wallpaper, shiplap, stained bead board, to vaulted ceilings and trusses. The hub of the home is the kitchen where they gather for meals and entertaining. It has two large islands, so there is plenty of prep space. But for the couple, Tony’s favorite area is the theater room and Shelly’s is the screened in porch.

“I wanted a home that was open, fresh, and light. I like the farmhouse look but wanted it to be a little dressier than that,” said Shelly. The Rhoades worked with Tara Coomer, owner and designer at Coomer and Co., starting from the construction phase, for fresh ideas and insight on the custom build. “Tara took my design ideas and made them come to life. She narrowed down all of the options and eliminated a lot of leg work for me,” said Shelly. “I think the look we were going for was a blend of several different styles. But overall, the house embodies a livable lux look. The design process was a collaborative effort with the homeowner’s great ideas and her trusting us to fill in the gaps and pull everything together into a cohesive design,” said Tara.
