Great Gifts for Your Mom on Mother’s Day

Story by Lyda Kay Ferree, The Southern Lifestyles Lady.

Mother’s Day will be here soon, which means that it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to cement your place as your mom’s favorite kid. Obviously you can’t buy a mother’s love, but you can at least grease the wheels by getting her the right gift.

From jewelry to cozy knitwear to perfume to spring bouquets to satin sneakers to room freshener (Try Wild Fig and Cassis scented home candle by Jo Malone London at Nordstrom’s.) to jewelry (It’s pretty hard to go wrong with jewelry!)...there is plenty from which to choose.

A Year’s Subscription to Garden & Gun Magazine

I have yet to meet a lady who does not enjoy this informative and fun publication! I look forward to receiving my subscription every other month.

A Day Of Pampering At A Spa

Almost every town or county has a spa. Granted, spas differ in offerings and price range from a basic 30-minute massage to a multi-hour experience consisting of a massage, wax, reflexology, a facial—the works. And I love the quietude of a spa. It is even more grand if it overlooks water. Speaking of water, don’t you enjoy the refreshingly cool spa water with cucumbers and/or strawberries and lemons?

Breakfast In Bed

What a treat! The smell of sizzling bacon (Don’t all Southerners adore bacon?) and pancakes or waffles drizzled with chocolate syrup and fresh fruit and hot coffee...What a way to start a new day!

A Cooking School Class

Cooking schools are so much fun, especially if it’s a girl’s weekend! Some cooking schools offer themed classes a la Mexican cuisine or Thai food or Charleston-style shrimp and grits (Are they not fabulous?). Moms could combine a cooking school class with an overnight stay at a fine hotel.

Afternoon Tea In The Lobby Of The Peabody Hotel

The Peabody, The South’s Grand Hotel, was the first hotel in Memphis to offer afternoon tea when the hotel re-opened in September 1981. Happily, the tradition of afternoon tea with friends and/or family continues today. It is almost a meal unto itself! And the ambiance is so special. As you sip your tea and enjoy delicious cucumber sandwiches and scones with jam, you are surrounded by a gorgeous lobby fountain with the famous mallard ducks, who march into the lobby daily at 11 am and 5 pm. Tip: Be sure to take the elevator to the roof and see the ducks’ penthouse and the fabulous view of the Mississippi River!

A Visit To Cheekwood Botanical Garden in Nashville, The Dixon Gallery & Gardens in Memphis, or Bellingrath Gardens in Mobile

These gardens are truly a sight to behold! There is no place more beautiful than these gardens in the springtime.

An Ideal Day

What about this? Sleep later than usual (no alarm clock), stay in your PJs and read, lunch with girlfriends or 5 pm cocktails with your besties (best girlfriends). Prosecco or Bellini or French 75 are personal favorites.

And here is a new delightful sounding spring beverage—Strawberry Fizz
