Local Flavors: The Fresh Prince of Shake Rag

Written by Chris Page

American culture has long understood young people stepping into unfamiliar territory and making it their own. That was part of the appeal of Will Smith in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, where his character had to learn quickly, adapt confi dently, and carve out his own place without losing who he was. In many ways, that same arc fi ts Sincere Page at Shake Rag Bar & Lounge. When Shake Rag Bar & Lounge opened on December 6, 2024, Sincere was not introduced as a bartender. His role was simple but signifi cant: stand at the front door to welcome people, set the tone, and make guests feel comfortable from the moment they arrived. It was a modest beginning, but it placed him at the front of the guest experience and at the start of a journey few could have fully predicted. Shortly after opening, the lounge faced an immediate need when the lead bartender stepped away. What had started as a small assignment at the door quickly became an opportunity for Sincere to step up unexpectedly. Unbeknownst to him, he had been preparing for this role since childhood during visits with his paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother. On his father’s side, Sincere’s grandfather, Leon Page, represented family history and influence. On his mother’s side, his grandmother, Mary Woodard, added laughter and love. Together, they shaped Sincere’s understanding of family and fellowship. But it would take a bartending industry veteran with more than 30 years of experience to help shape him into The Fresh Prince of Shake Rag. Chris Page, owner of Shake Rag Bar & Lounge and Sincere’s father, reached out to Mary East once the lead bartender stepped away. She stepped in for the next eight months and worked with Sincere, teaching him how to make cocktails properly. More importantly, she showed him that bartending is not just about pouring drinks, but about precision, presentation, and poise. In many respects, Mary became the matriarch of Shake Rag Bar & Lounge. When she left, she also left a lasting mark on Sincere. Under her guidance, he learned that a good mixologist does more than make drinks; they read the room, respect the craft, and understand that every drink served is part of the overall experience a guest will remember. Since then, Sincere has grown by leaps and bounds into one of the most recognizable and refreshing presences in the building. He is now sought after by both local guests and out-of-town visitors for his lemon drop martinis, his Old Fashioneds, and his signature cocktail, “The Fresh Prince,” made with a pour of Stagg bourbon, a hint of amaretto liqueur, and a splash of Sprite, then finished with cherry wood smoke. His journey also includes being a parent to his two daughters, Braelyn and Brexlie. Before he opens the bar for business, his daughters help with cleaning, like vacuuming and wiping down tables, allowing him to instill in them what was instilled in him as a child. He has no intention of pressuring them into the business, but he wants them to chart their own courses, just as he has. As he looks toward the future, Sincere sees how The Riverfront Development positions Shake Rag Bar & Lounge not only as part of the past, but also as part of the future of downtown Bowling Green. He is coming to understand that he is not just helping run a business. He is helping build a legacy. For Sincere, the journey hasn’t been all parental or professional, but also personal. He and his father, Chris Page, have not always been as close as they are now. But since opening Shake Rag Bar & Lounge and working side by side, their bond has strengthened through shared pressure, shared purpose, and the shared rhythm of building something together. Inside Shake Rag Bar & Lounge, that bond matters. Patrons often notice how much father and son look alike, talk alike, and work together as if they had been doing so their whole lives. In a way, they have, because the same cloth of Leon Page shaped both: watching people gather, listening to music, eating food, and seeing how a shared drink can become part of something larger. At Shake Rag Bar & Lounge, Sincere Page is building his own legacy through growth, grit, and grace. From the front door to behind the bar, he has found his place as The Fresh Prince of Shake Rag.
