VIP Top Docs & Health Pros: Desiree Hughes, APRN

Story by Amelia Bowen

Great healthcare always starts with a meaningful conversation. That fundamental belief is why Desiree Hughes chose a clinical model that allows her to spend unrushed, dedicated time with every single patient. At she·ology, Desiree provides comprehensive women’s healthcare through a deeply personalized approach that gives her the opportunity to truly know the women she serves, rather than just reviewing their charts. “I believe the best healthcare begins with listening,” Desiree says. “Every woman has a unique story, and when patients feel heard, respected and understood, we can build trust and make important healthcare decisions together.” A graduate of Western Kentucky University and Frontier Nursing University, Desiree has always been naturally drawn to a career centered entirely on caring for others. She notes that healthcare gives her the daily opportunity to educate, encourage and walk alongside patients through every distinct stage of life, whether they are arriving for an annual wellness visit, navigating complex hormone changes or managing chronic health concerns. What she enjoys most about her practice, however, is the genuine connection that happens during appointments. Over time, clinical conversations naturally extend into life updates. Patients regularly share photos of their children and grandchildren, celebrate personal milestones, talk about recent family vacations or open up during life’s more difficult, vulnerable moments. Those enduring relationships allow her to care for the whole person rather than simply treating isolated symptoms. At she·ology, Desiree sees about 15 patients each day, intentionally giving herself the time required to answer deep questions, provide thorough patient education and develop individualized care plans. As the region’s very first women’s healthcare practice to offer a membership-based Direct Primary Care model alongside specialized hormone health and weight management, the practice was intentionally designed to create an entirely different clinical experience. Patients are never rushed through appointments. Instead, they are welcomed into a calm space where listening, education and relationships come first. Outside the office, Desiree is wife to her husband, John, and a proud mom to their four-year-old son, Jett, who keeps life full of daily adventure. Whether they are gardening, swimming, spending time on the family farm or simply enjoying the outdoors together, family remains at the absolute center of her life. She and her family are also active, dedicated members of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Having the opportunity to care for women in the very same community she calls home makes her clinical work especially meaningful. Even as Bowling Green continues to grow rapidly, Desiree notes that the area has never lost the profound sense of connection that makes it special. She points directly to the inspiring way neighbors, churches and local businesses immediately came together following the December 2021 tornado as a beautiful reminder of the compassion and resilience that define South Central Kentucky.
