VIP Teacher Spotlight: Elizabeth Brown
Story by Amelia Bowen
A longtime educator within Bowling Green Independent Schools, Elizabeth Brown has spent more than a decade serving students and families at Dishman McGinnis Elementary School. After graduating from Western Kentucky University with a degree in Elementary Education, including student teaching experiences at Dishman McGinnis and abroad in Barcelona, Spain, she officially joined the school in 2012 following two years at Plano Elementary. Throughout her career, Elizabeth has taught every grade level from kindergarten through fifth grade across all subject areas and later served as an instructional coach for five years before recently stepping into her new role as principal. Along the way, she earned her Master’s in Teacher Leadership through the University of the Cumberlands, became a National Board Certified Teacher and completed her principal certification through WKU. Known for her energetic and student-centered approach, Elizabeth says the most rewarding part of education is helping children feel successful, valued and excited to learn each day. Whether working alongside students or supporting fellow educators, she brings a collaborative spirit and enthusiasm that continues to shape the culture of Dishman McGinnis.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT TEACHING? “Building relationships with students and making life long memories with students. True learning can’t happen without a sense of belonging. I am deeply passionate about cultivating a familial, inclusive culture where both staff and students feel seen, valued, and loved. My goal is always to create a positive, supportive environment where everyone thrives.”
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A CAREER IN EDUCATION? “Growing up, I always loved school and my teachers, as well as working with children as I babysat for many families I knew and loved. I loved the thought of being someone’s teacher and mentor, even if there are hard days in the journey. Making a small difference in students’ lives is something that I hoped to do each day.”
