Community Leaders in Finance, Insurance & Law: William J. Williford

Story by Amelia Bowen

William Williford’s passion for the legal field began early. At just 18 years old, immediately after high school, William started his legal career as a law clerk for attorney Mike Breen — now his law partner — and Judge Kerry Morgan. This early exposure to the legal profession laid the foundation for his future career. After gaining valuable experience in law, William answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. He served in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps as a noncommissioned officer for two enlistments, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6). As a paratrooper, he served in multiple prestigious units including the 82nd Airborne Division, Joint Special Operations Command and 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne). His military service included a combat deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where he earned the Combat Action Badge. William’s dedication to veterans extends well beyond his military service. He is a Department of Veterans Affairs accredited attorney, a Paid Up For Life Member of the American Legion, a Disabled American Veterans Life Member, an American Veterans Life Member and a Veterans of Foreign Wars Legacy Life Gold Member. Through Hospice of Southern Kentucky’s Veteran to Veteran program, he continues to support fellow veterans in the community. In 2024, he was appointed to the Kentucky Bar Association Military Law Committee, further reflecting his commitment to veteran advocacy. Academically, William is a three-time graduate of Western Kentucky University, earning a B.A. in Political Science along with both a B.A. and M.A. in English. He later received his J.D. from Nashville School of Law, where he served as Vice President of the Honor Council. He delivered a keynote speech at his law school graduation and received WKU’s Outstanding Master of Arts Student Award. Since 2022, William has volunteered as an advisor and judge for the Logan County High School Law Club, coaching students in mock trial competitions. He also holds a Rank I Kentucky teaching license. Professionally, William is licensed to practice law in Kentucky and Tennessee and is admitted to multiple federal courts. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association, Bowling Green-Warren County Bar Association, Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association and Kentucky Justice Association. He is also a Kentucky Bar Foundation Life Fellow. William and his firm were named Best Personal Injury Lawyer and Best Law Firm by Bowling Green Daily News readers in 2023, 2024 and 2025. In both 2024 and 2025, he was recognized as one of Kentucky’s Top 10 Personal Injury Attorneys Under 40 by The National Academy of Personal Injury Lawyers and named to The National Trial Lawyers Top 40 Under 40 Civil Plaintiff Trial Lawyers in Kentucky. In 2026, The National Trial Lawyers recognized him as a Top 100 Civil Plaintiff Trial Lawyer in Kentucky, The National Academy of Personal Injury Attorneys selected him as a Top 10 Personal Injury Attorney in Kentucky and the American Institute of Legal Advocates honored him as a Rising Star Member.
